The Importance of Standing Up for People When They Cannot Stand Up for Themselves

Throughout my life, I have been fortunate to experience two very different careers. One was on the football field, where teamwork, toughness, and perseverance were essential. The other was in the legal profession, where advocacy, responsibility, and trust became the foundation of my work. While those careers may seem very different on the surface, they have taught me a similar lesson: there are moments when people need someone willing to stand beside them and fight for what is right.

I have come to believe that one of the most important responsibilities any of us can accept is standing up for people when they cannot stand up for themselves.

Strength Is Not Always What It Appears To Be

When people think about professional athletes, they often think about strength. They picture competitors performing at the highest level, overcoming injuries, and pushing through challenges that most people never experience. During my years in professional football, I played alongside some of the toughest individuals I have ever known.

What many people do not realize is that even the strongest people can find themselves in situations where they need help. Injuries, health issues, financial difficulties, and legal challenges do not care how strong or successful someone once was. At some point, almost everyone encounters circumstances that are difficult to face alone.

The same is true outside of sports. Many people find themselves navigating unfamiliar systems, complex rules, or difficult situations that leave them feeling overwhelmed. In those moments, having someone who understands the process and is willing to advocate on their behalf can make a tremendous difference.

Advocacy Is About More Than Legal Knowledge

Over the years, I have represented many individuals facing significant challenges. While legal knowledge is certainly important, I learned long ago that advocacy is about much more than understanding laws and procedures.

True advocacy begins with listening.

People want to know that their concerns matter. They want to know that someone is paying attention to what they have experienced and what they are going through. Before solutions can be found, people need to feel heard and understood.

In my experience, some of the most meaningful conversations happen when clients realize they no longer have to face a difficult situation by themselves. Knowing that someone is willing to stand with them often provides a sense of confidence and hope that had been missing.

That human element is something that should never be overlooked.

Responsibility Comes With Experience

As we gain experience in life and in our professions, we also gain responsibility.

I have been fortunate to spend decades in both football and law. Those experiences taught me valuable lessons, but they also gave me opportunities to help others navigate challenges that I had seen before.

When you have knowledge, experience, or influence, I believe you have an obligation to use those tools in a positive way. That does not mean solving every problem for someone else. It means helping people find a path forward when they may not be able to see one themselves.

Whether it is a coach helping a young player, a veteran player mentoring a rookie, or an attorney guiding a client through a difficult situation, the principle remains the same. People who have experience should use it to help those who need support.

The Impact of Standing Beside Someone

One of the most rewarding aspects of legal work is seeing the impact that advocacy can have on a person’s life.

Many legal matters involve far more than paperwork or court proceedings. Behind every case is a person, a family, and a future. The outcome can affect financial security, access to medical care, peace of mind, and quality of life.

That is why I have always believed that lawyers must remember who they work for. The focus should never be on the attorney. It should always be on the client and the challenges they are facing.

When clients place their trust in an attorney, they are often doing so during one of the most difficult periods of their lives. That trust should never be taken lightly.

Standing up for someone means accepting the responsibility that comes with that trust and working diligently to protect their interests.

Why This Principle Matters Today

The world continues to become more complicated. Rules, regulations, and systems can be difficult for people to understand and navigate. Many individuals feel powerless when faced with large institutions or unfamiliar processes.

That is one reason advocacy remains so important.

People need knowledgeable professionals who are willing to guide them, support them, and help ensure that their voices are heard. They need individuals who understand that legal representation is not simply a service. It is a responsibility.

The best advocates understand that every client deserves respect, attention, and a genuine commitment to pursuing the best possible outcome.

That philosophy has guided me throughout my legal career, and it remains just as important today as it was when I first began practicing law.

A Commitment That Never Changes

Looking back on my years in football and law, one lesson stands above many others. Success is not measured solely by personal accomplishments. It is also measured by the impact we have on the lives of others.

There will always be people facing challenges they cannot overcome alone. There will always be individuals who need someone willing to stand beside them during difficult times.

When we have the opportunity to help, we should embrace that responsibility.

Standing up for people when they cannot stand up for themselves is not simply part of being a good attorney. It is part of being a good teammate, a good professional, and a good human being.

In the end, the ability to help others may be one of the most meaningful opportunities any of us will ever have.
